Boulder City

Boulder City

Created as a home for the workers who built the Hoover Dam, Boulder City stands as a time capsule, back to its Great Depression-era origins. Many of its original structures and destinations have been preserved, and you won’t find any casinos—gambling isn’t legal in this family-friendly, throwback town. But Boulder City isn’t just about its links to the past. It’s home to a wide range of worthwhile destinations, from scenic outdoor hiking, zip lining and boating spots to inviting restaurants, antique shops and watering holes. What follows are some recommended Boulder City haunts, along with some of the town’s best annual events. The town's master plan included shady parks, residential neighborhoods, and a downtown area that today maintains its historic character. Boulder City, 21 miles southeast of Las Vegas on U.S. 93, is a hub for those touring Hoover Dam, eight miles east, and Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Hoover Dam and Lake Mead make this city iconic!  Next time you get the itch to leave town, remember that there’s a vacation waiting to happen right here in Nevada, only minutes away.

Miles of trails, for hiking or biking go through and around the area. In the Downtown Historic District visitors can stroll the streets and learn about the area's history and attractions at the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum, which is located in the recently renovated Boulder Dam Hotel. Across the street from the hotel is the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce, which offers excellent tourist information for the region.

Boulder City has a number of hotels, both historic and modern, allowing visitors to base here and enjoy the charm and relaxing atmosphere. A variety of restaurants, with an array of cuisines, offers delicious choices. The small town feel can be enjoyed at the local bowling alley, neighborhood parks, golf courses, and during a number of festivals throughout the year.

Boulder City History

Boulder City was built in the 1930's to support the construction of the Hoover Dam, called Boulder Dam back then.  The city grew to house the workers and was much larger than neighboring Las Vegas at the time.  Since it was a federal town, gambling was, and still is illegal.  Over the decades, Boulder City has maintained its small town atmosphere, and growth has been limited by the city.  In the historic district, visitors can enjoy artwork, some of which is dedicated to the workers of the 1930's.  There is also a Hoover Dam Boulder City Museum, located inside the historic Boulder Dam Hotel, which presents and excellent history of the local history.

Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, working 24 hours a day, and cost over one hundred lives. Originally known as Boulder Dam from 1933, it was officially renamed Hoover Dam, for President Herbert Hoover, by a joint resolution of Congress in 1947.

Lake Mead

You may be familiar with Lake Mohave or Lake Mead. You may have even fished, floated, swam or boated in one of these incredible lakes. But that’s just 13 percent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The rest is a land of trails, scenic drives and campsites, waiting to be uncovered.  The recreation area is open 24/7, year-round. The Lake Mead Visitors Center is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.
